Fueled by events following the murder of George Floyd, 2020 was a moment of reckoning that accelerated the need for journalism to respond with more than the usual confrontational images and heated rhetoric of protest coverage.

Facing Race, an original series driven by seasoned journalists, people of color, in the KING5 newsroom presented a more thoughtful consideration of the issues, taking the time to delve into deep rooted systemic racism. There had never been anything like it in local television and it offered a unique platform for frank conversations, setting up contexts to promote change and healing. Facing Race was recognized with numerous awards including the Peabody. And the audience responded by making the series #1 in its time Sunday evening time slot for 13 consecutive weeks.
